The novel really hit the spot for a lot of readers who were looking for fiesty and fresh material to digest. It took on a life of its own after realizing that the antagonist was the wife in the story. According to the accolades, people found it refreshing that this novel was not your stereotypical display of the black man as the villian, abusing a woman in some way.
